Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration (MD) damages the retina (the film at the back of the eye that you see with) and is the most common cause of blindness in Australia.
While dry MD is the most common type, the wet MD is the most devastating, causing rapid loss of central vision. When diagnosed early, treatment for wet MD now exists. We can now halt the damage and preserve the vision in most cases of wet MD with eye injections.

The warning signs of macular degeneration include distortion of vision (for example, lines become wavy), loss of detailed vision or a dark spot in your vision. An eye examination should be performed immediately should this happen.

At Mona Vale Eye Centre, we have a high-definition Optical Coherence Tomography (Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT) that images the retina in great detail and monitors the progression of disease and its response to treatment. We also have a digital fundus camera which is used to diagnose MD and other retinal conditions.
Treatment of wet MD using Lucentis™,Eylea 8mg™ and Vabysmo™ is available at Mona Vale Eye Centre. For frequently asked questions about MD, click here.
