Cataract Assessment and Surgery

A cataract is the clouding (including yellowing) of the eye’s natural lens. With time, the cataract blurs vision and causes glare.

At Mona Vale Eye Centre, cataract surgery is the most common eye operation performed. We offer small-incision cataract surgery (phacoemulsification), and always replace the cataract with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). We use different types of IOL depending on the need of the patients. The choice of monofocal Vs trifocal (multifocal) implants will be discussed at the time of the consultation.

Each patient is individually assessed with corneal and retinal imaging and ocular measurements to help determine the suitability of the surgery and implant size.

Surgery is performed at Pittwater Day Surgery and Chatswood Private Hospital. The surgery is normally performed under local anaesthetic with mild sedation and takes approximately 20 minutes. This allows faster recovery and offers lower risk than with general anesthetic and traditional surgical methods.  Patients are discharged home the same day and reviewed the next day.
